THSSH Submits Grant to Purchase Rickey Property

THSSH Applies for Grant to Purchase Rickey HouseThe Historical Society of the Somerset Hills has submitted an application to the 2016 Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission Historic Preservation Grant Program to purchase a historic home in Basking Ridge.

Dan Lincoln, the Society president, and Cynthia Crosson, worked diligently to complete this exciting application. The application, submitted to the County on April 22, seeks funds to purchase the Peppard Rickey House which is located next door to the Brick Academy at 37 West Oak Street.

Currently living in Bedminster, Cynthia has spent most of her life in New Jersey and loves the beauty and history of the state. She grew up in Westfield and lived in Ridgewood for seven years after spending time in Germany, Columbus, Ohio and St. Louis, MO. She has lived in Bedminster for the past 14 years. Cynthia has a BA in Russian Area Studies, Boston College/Newton and a  MBA from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The Lord Stirling 1770s Festival

It's Living History Day at The Lord Stirling 1770s Festival

Colonial history lives at the Somerset County Park Commission's annual 1770s Festival when Lord Stirling's grand manor house and estate come to life in Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge, NJ. Colonial craftspeople ply their trades and a Revolutionary War military detachment camp on the former estate lawns and conduct maneuvers.

Fall Speaker Series Announced

  • 18th C. Clock Making in Colonial West NJ
    Thursday ∙ September 18
    • Few people realize that New Jersey was an important center of clock making during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Colonial NJ was geographically divided into East and West (presently North and South). Both areas produced grandfather clocks of high quality with a decorative design reflective of the local society and culture. Handcrafted timepieces continued into the 19th century until mass produced clocks from Connecticut made it possible for the average citizen to afford one. Clocks shown at the lecture are in private collections, museums, and historical societies. Guest Speaker: Dr. David Sperling, Antiquarian Horologist

    • Beer steins go back as early as the 14th century and are still collected and coveted. These steins, mugs, and tankards are prized for their unique craftsmanship and colorful ornamentation. Come join us for an informative slide presentation on the history of stein making followed by a festive tasting. You are also welcome to bring in your dusty stein for evaluation.     • Cranberries have been an important crop for New Jersey since the 19th century. It is one of the few fruits indigenous to the United States and was used as food, medicine, and dyes long before the European settlers arrived. Historic Blairsden Estate and Mansion to Open to Public in May 2014

Here's Your Chance to see one of America's Greatest Mansions!

Blairsden was the magnificent country home of Clinton Ledyard Blair, a New York City financier, sportsman and commodore of the New York Yacht Club. Designed and constructed between 1897 and 1903, this 62,000 - square-foot Louis XIV chateau-style mansion was the masterpiece of renowned architecture firm Carrère and Hastings and a favorite destination of New York City's elite during the Gilded Age.

Totally decorated for this great fundraiser by over 60 designers.

The area’s most celebrated house tour returns this holiday season with six Somerset Hills residences showcasing historic preservation, interior design and holiday décor!  Among those featured are an early Colonial Revival circa 1902 and a contributing property of the Olcott Avenue Historic District; a stately home on the Bernardsville Mountain situated on a five-acre property that once was part of the estate of pharmaceutical magnate Charles Pfizer, Junior; and a notable 1760 farmhouse associated with the Revolutionary War spy who was captured at the Parker Tavern (former Bernardsville Library).

The Brick Academy, an 1809 historic landmark, will once again serve as the hospitality

Dating Historic Building

Come to the Speaker SeriesOn Thursday, March 21 at 7:30 PM, The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills will welcome historic architect, Margaret Westfield, R.A. to share her extensive knowledge of historic buildings.

Ms. Westfield’s slide presentation program will illustrate the clues to deciphering a building’s past history. Both documentary research and physical evidence of change will be presented. The museum of the Gloucester County Historical Society, a 1765 Georgian building significantly altered in 1888, serves as a case study to further explain the architect’s work in dating historic buildings.  Refreshments will follow the program. Museum Exhibit Features Historic Politicians
of the Somerset Hills

Malcom Forbes - Famed Bedminster ResidentFamiliar names come to mind when we think of politicians from the Somerset Hills. Names such as Governor Chris Christie, who had at one time considered entering the race for the Republican Presidential nomination; Malcolm Forbes, who in 1957 ran unsuccessfully for Governor of New Jersey; Christine Todd Whitman, two-term Governor of New Jersey who was the first and to date only female Governor; and Thomas Kean, who also served two terms as Governor of New Jersey.

A new exhibit at the Brick Academy Museum will feature the historical politicians of the Somerset Hills (and nearby) who also played important roles in government. People such as Frederick Theodore Frelinghuysen, Samuel Lewis Southard and William Lewis Dayton, to name a few.

This exhibit starts in May and will grow throughout the year, ending on Sunday, January 20, 2013, after the Presidential Inauguration. Please stop by often to see this expanding exhibit and learn about the historical politicians of the Somerset Hills.

A new exhibit, "Hauntings in the Somerset Hills:  Fact or Fiction" opens at the Brick Academy on Sunday, October 2.  On display will be historical photographs and story boards of two intriguing properties:  The Vealtown Tavern, formerly the Bernardsville Library and now Meli Melo, and the Blairsden Estate in Peapack-Gladstone.  The exhibit can be viewed each Sunday in October 2011 during the hours 2-4:00 PM. Bedminster Fall Fest Membership Drive

Bedminster Fall Fest 2011As the leaves turn to orange and red and the crisp clear fall days give way to cool nights, there comes Fall Fest, Bedminster's celebration to Fall and community. The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills participated as a community service organization promoting the history of the local area including Pluckemin, the Vanderveer Knox House, and other Bedminster historic landmarks.

For 2011 THSSH welcomed the Vanderveer Knox House and General George Washingtion, as well as the Bernardsville Historic Preservation Commission to join THSSH promoting local history.

In addition to hand pressed apple cider and tractor hayrides, Brooks Betz, THSSH Trustee and Daniel Lincoln, President of the Bernardsville HPAC joined over a thousand guests at River Road Park in Bedminster for a great afternoon of sharing information and stories of historic happenings in and around the Somerset Hills.

Start at the Brick Academy, home to the Historical Society of the Somerset Hills (it's marked with a "Circled Question Mark".) Created by Trustee member Brooks Betz, "the interactive map allows people to recognize some of the historic buildings in the township without going outside". "Guided tours are given periodically by local historians, but we felt this might be a good way to allow visitors to familarize themselves witht the logistics of the tour before they visit," stated Betz.

History Quilt - Patchwork Tells History

The Basking Ridge Piecemakers quiltExpressing our heritage and history is alive and well, firmly sewn into the fabric of our community ...literally.

Volunteers from a Somerset Hills area quilting group called the "Piecemakers" who gather weekly at the Bishop Janes United Methodist Church in Basking Ridge, have created a handmade quilt depicting some of the most historic sites in Bernards Township to mark the 250th anniversary of Bernards Township.

Historic Boudinot House in Basking Ridge Makes National Register

Boudinot Mansion 2007Named after the Continental Congress President and Resident Elias Boudinot.
The Boudinot House was placed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places Sept. 11, 2009 and Dec. 18, 2009 respectively. New Jersey's esteemed historian John T. Cunningham explores the harsh circumstances and geography of this region during the War of Independence. This "geological fortress", Washington and the Continental Army's winter quarters for four years, may well be the place where America survived.

Author, John T. CunninghamJohn T. Cunningham has long been known as "New Jersey's popular historian," a title bestowed on him by the New Jersey Historical Commission. He has written over 50 books. Cunningham's first book, This is New Jersey, published in 1953 by Rutgers University Press, is still in print and has been revised six times. Other long-popular books are New Jersey: America's Main Road; The New Jersey Sampler; NEWARK; and The New Jersey Shore. Most recently, he wrote The Uncertain Revolution: Washington and the Continental Army at Morristown, which has earned highly favorable reviews for both its careful research and its pleasant readability.

Cunningham was a co-founder of the New Jersey Historical Commission and was its chair for six years. He also served as president of the New Jersey Historical Society for six years. Currently, he is a co-founder and vice president of the North Jersey American Revolution Round Table. His works have earned him nine honorary degrees and five Awards of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History.

He resides in Florham Park, New Jersey.
